Galelio Galelei created a society called the "Academy of the Lynx." He and his friends formed it in the spirit of free exchange and study that I feel is similar to the spirit found in Linux, BSD, GNU, and open source in general.

The logo on the left over there is from his society and can be seen in other places like the frontpiece of his book where he describes how the heavens move.
